Heavier Loads Leave Deeper Marks
The Mountain Doesn't Negotiate
Aspects refreshed Apr 12, 2026
When the first wagon trains crossed the Oregon Country, their heavy wheels cut deep grooves into the soft earth of the frontier. Over time, these ruts became the de facto paths that subsequent travelers followed - a physical record of all who came before. Rut Reckoning emerged as the conceptual embodiment of these permanent marks, representing the idea that the trail remembers everyone who passes through, and the reckoning of those marks determines who deserves to claim the promised land.
Deep, permanent furrows carved into frontier earth that cannot be easily erased - the wagon wheel impressions become fossilized evidence of passage. Blackened edges where fire and repeated passage have scorched the trail marks, creating a dark border around each groove. A continuous line connecting all four leagues as irrefutable proof of complete journey from plains through rivers, mountains, and to the promised land. Variable depth indicating the weight of those who passed - fully-loaded wagons leaving deeper impressions than those who lightened their load to survive.
Rut Reckoning serves as the ultimate proof of passage - survivors whose journey has carved meaningful tracks into the landscape distinguish themselves from those who were abandoned or turned back. It represents the frontier's unforgiving memory, recording every wagon train that passes and ensuring that those who complete the journey leave evidence that cannot be disputed. The depth and continuity of one's ruts prove whether they pressed forward to the promised land or fell behind into the hollow.
