Split-Back emerged from the first wagon train to attempt the crossing at the Great Divide - when the column reached the critical junction, the lead wagons split into two groups: those who pushed toward the promised land and those who turned back toward the hollows. The mark of that original division became etched into the collective memory of the trail, appearing on all who face the same impossible choice.
The Split-Back mark appears as a weathered leather patch divided by a clean scar - one side depicts a thriving cabin with smoke rising from the chimney, the other shows an empty hollow swept by relentless wind. The two sides represent opposing fates: the warm amber tones of continuation versus the cold slate gray of abandonment. It manifests differently depending on which path the bearer ultimately chooses, and it cannot be transferred - it marks the soul, not merely the body.
Split-Back serves as the ultimate arbiter of the series' central question: who becomes a Homesteader with their name burned into the record, and who becomes a Drifter whom the frontier chewed up and spit out. It appears at key decision points across all leagues to test the bearer's resolve, documenting every choice that accumulates toward the final verdict.
