Hollow Lantern
Guides Through the Hollow Places
I illuminate by consuming
A lantern maker traveling with an early wagon train became lost in a mountain fog and was never found. But his final creation - a lantern that burns without oil, glowing with an inner light - was discovered at the pass where he vanished. Now it appears to guide travelers through the most dangerous crossings, appearing at the moments when the trail's psychological darkness is heaviest.
The Hollow Lantern manifests as a sphere of amber light shaped like an old-fashioned trail lantern, hovering silently at chest height. Where a flame should be, there's only soft, steady illumination that casts no shadows - instead, the area around it grows more shadowed while the path ahead becomes clear. It appears only at night, at the moments when travelers face their greatest psychological challenges, and those who follow its guidance report a sensation of being hollowed out, as if the lantern is drawing something from them even as it shows the way forward.
The Hollow Lantern appears to travelers at their moment of greatest psychological darkness, marking those who can find guidance even when the trail has hollowed them out. It serves as the frontier's guide through emptiness - not a judge of worthiness, but a witness to endurance, appearing to both those who will become Homesteaders and those who will become Drifters.
