Grave Trail was forged when the first wagon train left Independence - the souls of those who died on the earliest passages bonded with the earth itself, creating a path that remembers its victims. The trail absorbed their remains into its very soil, transforming the route westward into a living memorial where every mile marks a grave and every river crossing claims its toll. What began as a simple path to Oregon became something far older and darker - a route that feeds on those who cannot keep pace.
Grave Trail manifests as a gnarled wooden post thrust into cracked prairie earth, its surface carved with fading names and dates that appear and disappear like heat mirages. The wood appears ancient, bleached by decades of sun, with dark streaks where rain has worn channels like frozen tears. Red earth veins pulse beneath its base, suggesting the blood and sacrifice that fed the ground. Small stone cairns surround its base - some containing actual remains, others empty monuments to the uncertain fate of the lost.
Grave Trail serves as the ultimate ranking system of the wagon train - position in the column is determined by who survives, and every player exists in relation to those who have already been claimed by the trail. It determines whether a traveler becomes a Homesteader with their name burned into the record or a Drifter who the frontier chewed up and spit out somewhere east of the Divide. The entity doesn't judge - it simply records who continues and who becomes part of the trail's dark legacy.
